As far as internships go, Anna Greenslade of Portsmouth has quite the fashionable job. Greenslade, a 2006 Portsmouth High School graduate and
current student at the University of Rhode Island, is interning at MTV fashion studios in New York City.
"It's just really cool that I have been watching TRL (Total Request Live) since I was in middle school and now I'm behind the scenes working on
it," said Greenslade.
"I just Googled it (the internship) and I knew it would be in New York," said Greenslade, who has been working since September. "When I didn't
hear back from them, I called, and I got an interview."
Greenslade flew down for her interview, and according to her mother, Ernestine "Ernie" Greenslade, her interviewers were impressed that she
would fly to New York from New Hampshire, just for an interview.
"Anna flew to NYC by herself and got herself to Time Square — not bad for a 19-year-old from New Hampshire," said Ernie Greenslade.
"She took the initiative to search the Web and apply online," said Ernie Greenslade. "We thought that was great but we never expected that she
would get a call since she was only a sophomore and she had no connections."
"I also love going to previews where clothing companies show us their spring lines of clothes and we pick out pieces we would like to borrow to be
put on air," said Greenslade.
Clothing has always been a large part of Anna's life, and fashion was something she took into consideration when applying to colleges.
"When Anna was little she was more interested in dressing up than in fashion," said Ernie Greenslade. "Our neighbors on Boss Avenue in
Portsmouth loved driving by and seeing her outfits and they still talk about it today. You never knew what Anna was going to be wearing — her
favorite was Peter Pan.
"We always told Anna to think about her passion when she was choosing a college major," said Ernie Greenslade. "I have to admit that I was a little
concerned when she decided to pursue fashion since it is a very competitive field. With this internship, I feel like she's off to a great start."
Anna's internship involves helping stylists pick out clothing for the MTV VJs to wear.
"Just being in the studio is awesome because I get to see a lot of amazing people and I see them behind the scenes and getting ready, not just in their
stage personalities."
"I also love going to previews where clothing companies show us their spring lines of clothes and we pick out pieces we would like to borrow to be
put on air," said Greenslade.
"I work inside the studio so everyone that comes in I get to see, some of my favorites were Vince Vaughn, Chris Brown, Natalie Portman and Alicia
Keyes."
"I did get to meet 50 Cent though which was fun."
Anna will also be helping out with MTV's holiday specials "getting people dressed in crazy costumes."
Anna is majoring in public relations at the University of Rhode Island, with a minor in fashion design.
New Hampshire dreaming, on such a winter's day
The Fresh Prints

The weather report tells of an impending snow-storm, and I breathe a sigh of relief while trying to hide my excitement.
Winter has begun, and with its frozen ground and icy roads comes the end of my first semester as a college student.
I remember it was so hot outside when I moved in, I was walking around in sandals, shorts and one shirt.
It seems like that day was only a week or two ago, but here I am dressing myself in a long sleeve shirt, heavy winter coat, hat and gloves
and stepping out from a very different building than when I first approached it, belongings in hand, sweating from every pore up
unfamiliar stairs to an unfamiliar room.
It's weird how the unfamiliar can become a new home in such a short amount of time.
I can't picture going back home for that amount of time and simply just slipping back into a pre-Keene state of mind.
Now that I've taken the plunge and been immersed in this circus I call my collegiate lifestyle, I'm not sure I want to know anything
else, which is why I think my home life could get a little depressing this winter.
Listening to the same elderly men and women complain about the price of detergent never really made my day.
I made a promise to myself when I graduated high school to cut my ties to my hometown as much as I could so I could move on to
something bigger.
I think I realize that I never hated my hometown or never wanted to have anything to do with it, but I just needed a change of
environment to learn more about myself than a small Connecticut farming town could offer.
College has brought out the personal best and worst of me in just three short months, and I think the reason I feel like it's home now is
because I've grown into a new skin of sorts.
Figuratively and literally if you are still catching onto my weather metaphor, I've taken on more layers since coming to college.
I'm still from that town with rolling hills and cows, but then again I feel very much a part of the Keene atmosphere.
Partaking in movie nights in the Mabel Brown Room, attending a party or three and working my behind off getting work done should
cover me as an honorary college student - right?
Anyway, enough about philosophical, retrospective thought on the shift from home to college; there's snow to talk about here!
Snow, that first marker that the semester is over, and it couldn't come at a better time.
Snow lets me know that time is still moving, which is especially important in a place like Keene where sometimes the days can just
melt into each other and no real sense of the world can be found, i.e. college bubble.
When those flakes fall I can have that relief that soon I won't be stressing out over papers I haven't written, speeches I haven't made and
ridding the dorm room of all residence hall violations, a very daunting task indeed.
This is the first time I've ever looked upon snow in this fashion, and I think it is very poignant, especially at this juncture in my life.
I've successfully completed my first semester as a college student and I've changed so much as a person and grown to be someone who
doesn't wear light summer clothes anymore, but has the experience and weight winter clothes carry, and it is going to snow to
commemorate this.
I can't get too carried away with myself yet.
I mean, in reality, this only the first portion of an astronomically bigger adventure in which I will probably have many markers of
experience to note.
I'm sure everyone knows when you hit one of those points it always feels special and that's probably why I'm choosing to bring this up.
It would certainly appear that I've somehow managed to survive the last two weeks. How!?
For Travel Channel star, there's no place like the Seacoast
NEW CASTLE — The Travel Channel's Samantha Brown has trekked her way across much of the world during her seven years as a
travel hostess with the station, but what you may not know is that she started some of that traveling while living on the New Hampshire
Seacoast in the mid-80s.
Back in those days it was a bike instead of a jet that carried her to see new sights.
"I'd always go for long bike rides down the coast toward Hampton or up towards Maine," Brown told Foster's Daily Democrat via e-mail.
"My favorite time of year is winter, when it's quiet and the light is soft. It's a much more personal time then in the summer."
Brown, 38, lived much of her childhood in Derry, N.H., but moved to New Castle during her senior year of high school. Her parents
continued to live in town for another seven years and she would come home during the summer from Syracuse University, where she
earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theater.
While living in New Hampshire, Brown attended South Range Elementary School, Gilbert H. Hood Middle School and Pinkerton
Academy, all in Derry.
She held several jobs in the area before her days as a travel maven. One of her first jobs was as an information girl at Canobie Lake
Amusement Park.
"I moved up in the world by creating sundaes and mixing frappes at an ice cream shop called Lickety Split," Brown wrote. "Then I hit it
big by waiting on tables at the Weathervane in Kittery, Maine."
It was in her mid-20s that she started traveling beyond the borders of the United States, said Brown, but she "really caught the bug" in
her early 30s.
For three years now she's been traveling abroad. One of the wildest places Brown says she's ever been to is Copper Canyon, Mexico.
"An old-fashion train took me to a small village, and then I hopped in a van for a six-mile ride to my lodge, that took two hours because
of the hairpin turns along 1,000-foot canyon drops," she wrote. "Uno Lodge sits like an eagle's nest overlooking the canyon. It's an
unbelievable feeling being so far from modern civilization."
"Each night ended with an incredible meal and fresh lime juice margaritas. There's only so much wild I can take."
One of the neatest cultural experiences was in Xochimilco, near Mexico City.
"It's a network of ancient canals built for agriculture," wrote Brown. "Today, it's a hugely popular destination for Mexican families
and being there was easily one of the best days of my life. It's a day long event, which begins with the renting of a flat-bottom boat and a
driver who pushes it along."
"There is a long table and two benches in each boat which can fit up to 20 people. The families bring their own food and have a picnic
while they float through the beautiful canals."
Brown averages about a country a week, but she calls New Castle and the New Hampshire Seacoast "a real unknown jewel to the rest
of the country" for a travel destination.
Though she's filming abroad now in Central and South America, Brown says she'll be home for Christmas — one of the two times
during the year she comes back to the area.
"I always spend Christmas Eve home in Portsmouth," she said. "I love the fireworks."
Not a lot of people recognize her, just some here and there, Brown adds. "Samantha Brown: Passport to Latin America" and "Passport
to Europe" airs on the Travel Channel. Visit travel.discovery.com for time listings.
