Nevada’s First Lady, Dawn Gibbons, has commissioned Steven Saylor/Evergreen Studio to create an original painting and a Limited Edition Giclée
print for the benefit of Autism Services in Nevada.
The basic premise of the painting is a scene depicting the ribbon cutting ceremony held on the front steps of the Governors Mansion on opening
day in July 1909. The scene is to include Nevada’s six living Governors, First Lady Dawn Gibbons, Governor Denver Dickerson and First Lady
Una Dickerson, who were the first to occupy the Mansion.
Additionally, a select group of celebrities who have a connection to Nevada or Autism will be invited to join in the scene. Props and costumes will
reflect the fashion of the day in 1909. Additional figures will be placed in the scene to include children and pets as needed.
Governor Denver Dickerson will be featured cutting the ribbon. The scene will include people from all walks of life. Including cowboys, military
personnel, miners, legislators, train engineers, ranchers/farmers: think Norman Rockwell characters.
Once the painting is completed 260 Limited Edition Giclée prints will be produced and then individually signed by each governor and the celebrities
in the painting. The painting and signed prints will be unveiled in July 2009 at the Governor’s Mansion in honor of the Mansions Centennial
Celebration.
Proceeds form the sale of the prints will go to Autism Services in Nevada. The issue price for the print has not been determined.
Individuals and/or galleries interested in the prints should contact:
Evergreen Studio at 400 Main Street, Dayton NV 89403.

You almost can’t stay in the room’
Students experience the effects of AIDS through displays
By Michael Lyle, Features Editor
Published on November 29, 2007
The room was quiet, yet filled with the sounds of many voices including those who lost their lives and those who lost someone they
loved. Their voices were heard through the eight 12-square-foot pieces of quilt that covered the walls and part of the floor of Room 224
in the Student Union.
On one of the posters put around campus quoting individuals affected by HIV and AIDS, a Florida man named Darren said, “I have lost
both family and friends. I’ve done what I could to help stop the spread of HIV by educating myself and those around me.”
Corresponding to this quote, during Nov. 26 through Nov. 30, AIDS Awareness Week, UNLV joins a national movement to celebrate,
mourn and educate about the impact AIDS has had on the world.
According the Centers for Disease Control, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, AIDS, was officially named in 1982. Two years
later, in 1984, the virus that causes AIDS, Human Immunodeficiency Virus, HIV, was named
Since then, more than 40 million people have been diagnosed, with 5,690 AIDS and HIV infections living in Clark County, according to
a 2006 study done by Southern Nevada Health District. According to the same study 2,056 have died due to AIDS.
Among those 5,690 living with the disease, 31 percent are between the ages of 21 and 30. It is estimated that half of new HIV infections
in the United States are among people 25 years old and younger.
The stories of people affected by the epidemic out weigh the impact of statistics.
As seen on another one of the posters around campus, a Michigan man named Mark said, “How does a person describe the effects of
being told they are HIV positive? For myself, it was like falling into a black hole one month after my 33 birthday.”
This week around campus, the stories have a voice through these posters and sections of the AIDS Memorial Quilt. The quilt, which
was an idea of gay rights activist Cleve Jones and made a reality in 1987, is comprised of more than 40,000 panels each measuring 12
square feet, tells individual stories. People from every state and 28 countries are represented on the quilt.
The quilt was displayed for the first time Oct. 11, 1987 at the National Mall in Washington D.C. during a march for gay and lesbian
rights. About 500,000 people visited the quilt, which led to four-month national tour.
Since 1987, more than 14 million people have visited the quilt displayed at thousands of different sites. Currently at UNLV, there have
been a little more than 80 viewers since the display opened on Monday.
“Various people come out of the room speechless,” said Mattie Stevens, program coordinator for multicultural programs.
Stevens, who was one of many to help out by providing students information outside of the display room, said people were impacted by
the pieces. She said people were taken back by the fact that the stories were from people who died not to long ago
“Even though it was only a small piece of the quilt, it is a bit overwhelming,” said Shayla Washington, a junior majoring in broadcast
journalism. “You see how many people died and get a piece of them.”
Washington said she heard about the quilt before, but seeing it was a different experience.
“You almost can’t stay in the room too long,” she added.
For Kelsey Isechal, a junior majoring in criminal justice said it was her first time in the room.
“It is very interesting to see the stories of people who have passed away,” she said.
Leading up to Dec. 1, the 17th annual World AIDS Day, UNLV will be hosting events around campus to show students the seriousness of
this epidemic.
The events this week also included the field of flags located in North Field, which featured the 2,056 red flags, representing the Clark
County residents who have died because of AIDS or HIV, interwoven in 5,690 white flags, representing the number of Clark County
residence currently living with AIDS or HIV, in the shape of an the AIDS awareness ribbon. Along with the field of flags was sidewalk
art on the alumni walk, allowing students, staff and faculty to create hopeful and mournful messages with chalk. This weeks events will
conclude with Fashion with a Passion, which is a fashion show and auction held Friday at 9 p.m. The show’s proceeds will go to Aid for
AIDS in Nevada. The quilt will be on campus until Friday and is open to visitors from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.
