Governor's Ball, sans governors
Monday, December 10, 2007
Gene O. Morris
Because of snow and ice, Gov. Dave Heineman and U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson were unable to make it to McCook for the 2007 Governor's
Ball.
But, despite the absence of the honored guests, the festivities went on at the Republican River Valley Event Center in grand and
eloquent fashion.
Braving the ice, cold and snow, more than 200 guests turned out in gowns, tuxedos and suits for the grand march, a special flag
presentation, a speech by the mayor and a night of dancing to the sounds of the Lonny Lynn Orchestra.
"I thought the evening went extremely well," said Mayor Dennis Berry. "The people of McCook have much to be grateful for and it
was nice to come together to celebrate. We missed Gov. Heineman and Sen. Nelson, but we were proud to be host to so many
contributors to our community's history."
Mayor Berry found out just a half hour before the Governor's Ball that he would be serving as master of ceremonies. The scheduled
emcee, Seth Denny of NTV News, canceled because of the weather, leaving Berry to pull together his remarks in a short amount of
time.
As usual, he delivered with eloquence.
The mayor started with these words: "Tonight we celebrate the proud heritage of McCook. For 125 years, we have faced the challenges,
the obstacles, and adversity thrown our direction. And we are still standing. But, as we celebrate the past, we know that to be here for
another 125 years we must look to the future."
He continued: "We are united and thank the citizens of this community whose faith and dedication and unwillingness to give up on
themselves or this town have paid dividends for all of us over the past 125 years."
The mayor went on to say: "Let us pledge to maintain the McCook spirit of voluntary service, the spirit of cooperation and friendliness,
the spirit of individual and community initiative ... a spirit that fills our hearts, minds and very being like the snow fills the reservoir at
Hugh Butler Lake."
Mayor Berry and his wife, Cora, were joined at the front table by Jon Morrison and his companion, Sandra Juster, from Las Vegas, Nev.
Jon was here to represent his father, the late Gov. Frank B. Morrison.
Other distinguished guests included State Sen. and Mrs. Mark Christensen of Imperial; former State Sen. Tom Baker of Trenton; and
former State Sen. and Mrs. Owen Elmer of Indianola. All the senators risked hazardous driving conditions to get to McCook for the
ball. Sen. and Mrs. Christensen had the biggest ordeal, with the senator flying back Saturday from Washington, D.C. to Denver, then
traveling snowy roads from Colorado to Imperial to McCook.
A highlight of the evening came when Phil Johansen, field representative for Sen. Nelson, presented a U.S. flag to Walt Sehnert,
representing the Museum of the High Plains. At the senator's request, the flag was flown over the U.S. capitol in honor of McCook's
quasquicentennial celebration. It will now be permanently housed at the museum in McCook.
To start the event, a Army Reserve color guard headed a procession of dignitaries, including Jon Morrison, the state senators, the
mayor, and Doug Vap, chairman of the Nebraska Aeronautics Commission; Leigh Hoyt, Red Willow County commissioner; Jerry Vap,
Nebraska Public Service Commissioner; Dr. Richard Tubbs, vice president of McCook Community College; Coleen Grant, McCook
City Council member; Aaron Kircher, McCook City Council member; Jim Ulrich, president of the McCook Area Chamber of
Commerce; and Dale Dueland, president of the McCook Economic Development Corp.
The banquet, featuring entrees of prime rib and salmon, was served by the staff of Sehnert's Bakery and the Bieroc Cafe.
To bring the special evening to a close, the crowd danced to the music of the Lonny Lynn Orchestra. The band, sponsored by Linda
Maiden of State Farm Insurance, brought back memories of Elks dances of old, when hundreds of Southwest Nebraska and Northwest
Kansas residents gathered for Saturday night dancing.
The evening was recorded for posterity by Tor and Holly Olson of Olson's Photography, who took pictures of the formally dressed
guests.
"It was a great evening," said Terri Shipshock, one of the event planners. "We need to do things like this more often."
